project case studies

The following work was carried out under employment with Roger Griffiths Associates Ltd. and Moore Environment Ltd.  I remain in part-time employment at Roger Griffiths Associates.

Landscape Capacity Study, Midlands

2009 (Roger Griffiths Associates Ltd.)
At the earliest stages of planning and design, this analysis of a site at the edge of a rural town identified key opportunities and constraints, visual relationships and the potential for sensitive development.  The many traditional orchards in decline in the area suggest that new community orchards forming part of any new development would be a valuable contribution to enhancing landscape character as well as a community building facility, Public Open Space and a rationale for "green buffers" between new and existing areas of housing.

Landscape Character and Environmental Assessment, Shropshire

2002-2004 (Moore Environment Ltd.)
Character studies at locations around Shropshire under consideration for infrastructure enhancements.  Management of multidisciplinary environmental teams in the creation of  Environmental Impact Assessments.  Public consultation on the principle of and potential routes for new roads.

To appreciate the spirit of any landscape requires persistent looking, listening and feeling.  Experience can help identify some of what makes a place unique but the people who know best are those who live with the view, walk their dog, plough the fields or go to school there.  Outsiders can only approximate.  So development in any place should start from a position of sensitivity to the existing environment, testing what capacity it has to accommodate the kind of change proposed.
